Why We Farm

“Why We Farm”  by Elvira DiBrigit is an investigation into the whole truth about life as a modern day farmer. Viewed through the lens of the environment within the Capay Valley of northern California, each chapter features a different model of farming. In each profile, farmers share the stories behind their work and their lives on the farm; the business side of production, the personal challenges they face, and words of advice for the would-be-farmer.

"...an American tale about the cycle of rural life as its pioneer farmers and farm families reinvigorate America's rural valleys. Wells go dry, water quality is poor, people divorce - all told from sitting at the kitchen table with the farmers she features, or walking their fields..." - Ann M. Evans

In 2000, Elvira DiBrigit moved with her family to Capay Valley, where her passionate interest in sustainable living took hold. While teaching, she explored curricula surrounding farming, environmental preservation and nutrition - all in support of sustainable living.
